Finding A Chow Friendly Veterinarian

Q I just wanted to compliment you on your support and care for chow chows! I am a new owner of a Chow Chow puppy named “Won-Ton”, he goes everywhere with me and I would have to say he is the “smartest” pup I have ever had. Although, I am having a slight problem getting him to want to socialize with other people, he is almost 10 weeks old and he doesn’t want too much to do with other people. If you can make any suggestions on this problem, I would love the advice because I love my dog! Also, I just took in two abandoned kittens that barely have their eyes open and he is Won-Ton is being a great help in taking care of them, he sleeps with them, cleans them and becomes very concerned when they sound unhappy. This is shocking to me only because of all the bad things I have heard about “Chows”.

One more thing I was wondering if you could help me out on is how to choose a good vet? The vet I take my other dog (pit bull) to has been great up until I took little Won-Ton in to see him, he dislikes chows so much that the last two times I’ve taken my pup in (for shots) he has in his own way advised me to reconsider having a chow for a pet. He says this is the only breed that he does not recommend a person to get. For this reason I would be scared to take my puppy to him if anything was to happen to him—I’m worried that he would just want to put him to sleep.

A Have you read the socialization tips? There you can get some ideas to get started in the right direction. Being with and around the kittens is a good sign. In terms of finding a veterinarian that is friendly with Chow Chows, I suggest is to contact the local veterinarians in your area, talk with them and let them know about your concerns and that you want to build strong long term relationship with them to care for your Chow Chow.

When you call, ask for a good time to speak with the actual veterinarian, then give them a call and speak directly with the doctor. This way you will get the right answer, as sometimes the secretaries just give their own personal opinions. It is important that the doctor is comfortable with Chow Chows and willing to work with them. If they have any doubts or mistrust, then your Chow will sense it and there will be a risk of potential problems. Then again, some doctors just need to meet the dog to gain each others trust and comfort. Don’t be afraid to visit all the vets in your area. You might get a lot of negatives, but you should be able to find one that will work with Chow Chows and you’ll know when you’ve found the right one for you and your Chow Chow.

Also you can try to find local breeders and other rescue organizations to see what they can recommend for a vet. I hope this helps guide you and your Chow Chow to make the right choice. My chows have always owned their own cats lol. Finding a vet is a problem though, i have found that female vets are more likely to accept chows than men are. my vet knows the biggest danger from my dog is him jumping in his lap

Thank you for sharing this information on finding a chow friendly veterinarian. I just adopted a young male Chow and he is so great! He is nice, friendly and I want him to have good health and a long life. I have been searching for a veterinarian who will accept to see a Chow just in case there are any problems with his health. Like you said, “try to find local breeders and other rescue organizations to see what they can recommend for a vet.” Thanks again!

Does anyone know of the best vet in newyork city near staten Island. My pup is 11 months old. He dislocated his hip we are in desperate need for help with this. We brought him to the emergency hospital in staten island and they set it and bandged it. They suggested keeping in a bandage for 4 weeks to see if it will stay in the socket but it didn’t stay it popped back out we are now looking for the best Dr. We can find for surgery. The vet in staten island said he was born with bad hips and will most likely need surgery.
